Showcased at the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, Ganga Ki Utpatti is a virtual reality film that brings mythological storytelling into an immersive format.

The film follows the origin of Ganga, the goddess who takes form as the sacred river, told through a conversation between a young girl and her grandmother.

Hosted in the Immersive Zone at Prayagraj, the project was part of an event anticipating over 400 million attendees.

The experience was developed in collaboration.

Presented by XR Central, the installation offered a quiet and powerful space for reflection, blending tradition with immersive technology.

Brief

Film Story

Set in a quiet moment between a grandmother and her granddaughter waiting for water, Ganga Ki Utpatti retells the mythological origin of the sacred river Ganga.

As the child grows restless, the grandmother begins to narrate the ancient story of how the river descended from the heavens to Earth, a divine act born from devotion, penance, and the will of the gods.

Through this intimate exchange, the film bridges generations, bringing myth to life through the lens of immersive storytelling.

Ashwamegh

This scene guided the depiction of King Sagar’s horse sacrifice ritual. We focused on the grandeur of royal processions, ancient cityscapes, and ceremonial iconography to build the world of the king’s sons and their quest.

The Birth

This visual formed the foundation for Ganga’s divine origin story. Her celestial presence, serene flow, and connection to the heavens were key in shaping the ethereal aesthetic of the goddess as she prepares to descend to Earth.

Shiva’s intervention is both powerful and spiritual. This reference shaped the visual drama of the descent, as Shiva absorbs Ganga’s force in his hair.

It helped us balance scale, light, and motion to evoke awe and cosmic balance.

Ganga Reborned

This moment captures Ganga’s emergence into the earthly realm. We drew from this imagery to show her transformation into a river, flowing with grace, interacting with sages and people, and beginning her journey as a source of life.

The immersive experience of Ganga Ki Utpatti was built using stylized 3D environments, hand-painted textures, and spatial audio to enhance narrative depth. Each scene was carefully crafted to evoke a sense of mythology and reverence, blending traditional Indian aesthetics with the immersive power of VR.

From the celestial realms to the earthly landscapes of ancient India, the environments were designed to guide the viewer through Ganga’s divine descent. Characters were created with a soft, illustrative style to maintain warmth and emotional connection, while real-time interaction was minimized to allow the story to unfold with cinematic pacing.

All assets were optimized for standalone headsets, ensuring accessibility without compromising visual richness or performance.
